Alfama, long known as the popular heart of the city, Alfama, embodies the Lisboa soul in being the home of the moorish past of Lisbon, labyrinthine streets between Castle and riverside. Every year, in the Santos Populares Festivals that stretch out through all of June, this heart is restrengthened, and the relationship between Lisbon ´s inhabitants from newer parts of the city is revitalized, through the eating of sardines, drinking beer and general merriment.
