Alfama, long known as the popular heart of the city, Alfama, embodies the Lisboa soul in being the home of the moorish past of Lisbon, labyrinthine streets between Castle and riverside. Every year, in the Santos Pupulares Festivals that stretch out through all of June, this heart is restrengthened, and the relationship between Lisbon ´s inhabitants from newer parts of the city is revitalised, through the eating of sardines, drinking beer and general merriment. The buildings tend to be small in the Alfama, and grown up in narrow spaces to reach the sun. A rooftop view over Alfama is second to none.
